Phillies Move into Tie with Mets in National League East After Taking Second Straight from Braves

Philadelphia scored four runs in the first inning and Kyle Kendrick pitched six strong innings for his 10th win of the year as the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 6-4 to move into a tie with the New York Mets in the National League East.

 

Ryan Howard highlighted the Phillies first inning with his 44th home run of the year, a two-run shot off Braves’ starter John Smoltz. Philadelphia tacked on another two runs in the third when Pat Burrell hit his 30th homer of the season and the Phillies had a 6-0 lead.

 

Atlanta finally got to Kendrick in the sixth inning when Chipper Jones hit a two-run shot and Mark Teixeira followed with a solo bomb that cut the Phillies lead in half. After Kendrick got through the rest of the inning Charlie Manual turned to Tom Gordon and J.C. Romero to hold the lead and the two relievers held the Braves scoreless.

 

Heading into the top of the ninth the announcement was made that the Mets had fallen 3-0 to the St. Louis Cardinals and the Phillies needed just three outs to pull even in the NL East. Brett Myers gave up a quick home run to Jeff Francouer but managed to pick up three outs to secure the win.

 

Philadelphia will now host the Washington Nationals starting Friday.
