AP College Football: SEC Week 5 Schedule

Atlanta, GA 9/29/2007 4:05:41 AM

#2 LSU vs. Tulane @ 12pm EST Saturday

LSU brings in the No. 1 defense in the nation as they are first in rushing defense, scoring defense and total defense. Led by defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey and linebacker Ali Highsmith, the Tigers will be on the prowl Saturday against the Green Wave. Tulane is going to have a long night at home against LSU.

Auburn vs. #4 Florida @ 8pm EST Saturday

After the exceptional performance by quarterback Tim Tebow last week, the Gators are looking better than last year’s national championship team. Versatile wide receiver Percy Harvin should have a lot of total offense yardage. Auburn has been disappointing as they have dropped out of the 25 early in the season. The 2-2 Tigers will have an uphill battle against SEC rival Florida.

Mississippi State vs. #16 South Carolina @ 12:30pm EST Saturday

Mississippi State battled Florida last week and only lost by six points. They come into this game with a little more swagger against yet another ranked opponent. They are 3-1 with the worst passing and total offense in the SEC. The Gamecocks have the nation’s second best passing defense, so it is safe to say the Bulldogs will have to beat them with the run. Linebacker Jasper Brinkley is out for the season, so Coach Steve Spurrier will have to maintain his defensive momentum or else, it will be an upset in Columbia.

Florida Atlantic vs. #14 Kentucky @ 1pm EST Saturday

The Wildcats have been riding the wave of quarterback Andre Woodson’s success. The Heisman candidate has been on fire all season and it doesn’t seem like it will cool off anytime soon. Florida Atlantic comes in with a 3-1 record and looks to spoil Kentucky’s season and Woodson’s Heisman hopes with an upset in this non-conference game.

Mississippi vs. #15 Georgia @ 1pm EST Saturday

The Bulldogs beat Alabama by the skin of their teeth, 16-12, in overtime. Quarterback Matthew Stafford is coming into his own and improving on a very good freshman season last year. In comparison, Ole Miss has more offensive weapons with running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis and wide receiver Mike Wallace. However, the Rebels have given up 30 points per game this season.

#22 Alabama vs. Florida State @ 5pm EST Saturday

After losing a tough battle against Georgia, the Crimson Tide are going to be either distraught or have something to prove. Knowing Coach Nick Saban, it will be the latter. In the coaching battle of the season, Saban and Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden will battle wits. However, Alabama has more talent than FSU on both sides of the ball. Florida State has the No. 12 rushing defense in the country, which can neutralize freshman starter Terry Grant on the ground.

North Texas vs. Arkansas @ 5pm Saturday

This game is going to be one of strengths and weakness. Heisman frontrunner Darren McFadden leads the nation in rushing yards per game and Arkansas, as a team, is third in rushing offense. North Texas’ total defense is second to last in the nation. Arkansas’ passing game is 108th in the country, while North Texas is fifth. Expect the Razorbacks to run all over UNT, while North Texas to pass all over Arkansas. In the end, Arkansas will be too much.

Eastern Michigan vs. Vanderbilt @ 7pm EST Saturday

Vandy wide receiver Earl Bennett leads the SEC in receptions and receiving yards. Bennett will continue his road to the Biletnikoff Award with a solid game against Eastern Michigan. Vanderbilt’s decent defense can counteract Eastern Michigan’s lack of offense, which is 112th in total offense nationally.
