AP Top 25 Scores: #18 South Florida Bulls Shut Down #5 West Virginia Mountaineers to Earn Upset

Atlanta, Ga. 9/29/2007 12:51:39 PM

The #18 South Florida Bulls shut down Heisman hopefuls Steve Slaton and Pat White on Friday night to earn a surprising 21-13 victory over the #5 West Virginia Mountaineers at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on Friday night.

South Florida’s defense was dominant throughout the game and earned the Bulls their first score of the game after Ben Moffitt picked off White and ran it back 26-yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter.

The Bulls would get on the board again in the second after quarterback Matt Groethe scrambled away from pressure and found Carlton Mitchell for a 55-yard touchdown strike to push their lead to 14-0. The Mountaineers nearly went the entire first half without scoring but Pat Mcafee was able to kick a 36-yard field goal for West Virginia’s first points.

Determined to keep the pressure on the Mountaineers the Bulls came out in the second half and took their first possession 74 yards on 13 plays and extended their lead to 21-3 on a 19-yard touchdown run from Jamar Taylor.

West Virginia continued to struggle on the offensive side of the ball as they managed just a field goal in the third quarter. They were finally able to get into the endzone in the fourt quarter when backup quarterback Jarrett Brown, playing for White who was injured in the second quarter, found Darius Reynaud on a 9-yard touchdown with just under six minutes left in the game.

The Mountaineers had one more chance to make a push for overtime but failed on a fourth down conversion; sealing the win for the Bulls.

West Virginia shot themselves in the foot throughout the game, turning the ball over six times and failing to ever get their running game going. After averaging 357 yards on the ground in their first four games the Mountaineers were held to a modest 188 yards Friday night.
