Carlos Zambrano threw seven scoreless innings and Alfonso Soriano hit his 32nd homerun of the season as the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-0 on Friday night to clinch the National League Central title.
Soriano lead off the game with a homer to put the Cubs on track and they added another run in the second when Ryan Theriot plated Mark DeRosa with a sacrifice fly to center.
As for Zambrano, there was little the Reds could do to against the big right-hander.
The Cubs extended their lead to 6-0 in the top of the eight when Jacques Jones doubled home Aramis Ramirez and DeRosa. Bob Howry and Ryan Dempster held the Reds to two hits over the final two innings to preserve the shutout and put the Cubs in the playoffs for the first time since 2003.
Zambrano improved to 18-13 on the year while Reds starter Bronson Arroyo fell to 9-15.
