Boston Red Sox Take AL East Title with Win Over Minnesota Twins

Atlanta, Ga. 9/29/2007 1:46:14 PM

Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched eight strong innings, allowing just six hits and two runs while David Ortiz finished 3-4 including his 35th home run of the year as the Boston Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Friday night. Boston’s win coupled with the New York Yankees loss to the Baltimore Orioles gave the AL East title to the Red Sox for the first time in 12 years.

Boston jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Mike Lowell drove in Ortiz with a single and J.D. Drew followed with a double to score Lowell.

Lowell put the Red Sox on the board again with a ground out in the third inning that scored Manny Ramirez. For Lowell it was his 118th RBI of the season, continuing to add to his record for a Red Sox third baseman.

With Boston up 4-0 Dice-K handled the Twins with relative ease until the seventh when Justin Morneau homered and Garrett Jones scored on a Brian Buscher ground out to cut the Red Sox lead in half.

Boston grabbed one of those runs back in the top of the eighth when Ortiz hit a Matt Guerrier delivery over the left field wall for a solo shot.

In the ninth Jonathan Papelbon came on to record his 37th save of the year.

Boston will now host the LA Angels in the first round of the AL playoffs.
