Kansas State Wildcats Use Defense and Special Teams to Knock Off #7 Texas Longhorns

Atlanta, Ga. 9/30/2007 8:17:39 AM

The Kansas State Wildcats got a 41-yard interception return from Ian Campbell for a touchdown, an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from James Johnson and an 89-yard punt return for a TD from Jordy Nelson to upset the #7 Texas Longhorns 41-21 on Saturday.

Texas looked awful in so many areas of the game that it was difficult to pinpoint one area that led to their fall. Four turnovers certainly didn’t help matters any as starting quarterback Colt McCoy was picked off four times in the game.

Kansas State played turnover-free football to make up for the fact that Texas out-gained them 330-272 on the offensive side of the ball.

The Wildcats held a 24-14 lead at the half, 14 of their points coming from Campbell’s interception and Johnson’s return. Texas had knotted the score at 14-14 when Johnson took the ensuing kickoff back 85-yards to take the air out of Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Texas climbed back to within three with a touchdown early in the third quarter but Kansas State added a field goal and then Nelson returned a punt 89-yards for a score to boost the Wildcats lead to 34-21 heading into the fourth.

Both Johnson and Nelson scored on Kansas State offensive drives as well. Nelson scored the game’s opening touchdown on a 4-yard reception while Johnson added the final touchdown on a 2-yard run.
