AP Top 25 Rankings Week 5: LSU Tigers New No.1 in Top 10 Shakeup

Atlanta, Ga. 10/1/2007 3:15:24 AM

The LSU Tigers are the new AP college football #1 with the USC Trojans landing at #2 after a weekend full of upsets sent voters scrambling to rearrange the latest voting on the nation’s top teams.

With their 34-9 win on Saturday the LSU Tigers earned the #1 ranking from voters in the AP Top 25 this week. The Tigers were led by 258 yards passing from Matt Flynn and a pair of touchdown runs in the fourth quarter from Charles Scott.

Despite beating the Washington Huskies 27-24 on Saturday the USC Trojans feel from the top spot to #2 in the AP Top 25. The Trojans narrowly escaped their first loss of the year despite out-gaining the Huskies 460 yards to 190 in the game.

The Golden Bears of California climbed to #3 this week after beating the #11 Oregon Ducks 31-24 on Saturday. Justin Forsett rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns while DeSean Jackson totaled 161 yards receiving and a pair of TDs.

Ohio State climbed four spots to #4 this week after Saturday’s 30-7 victory over the Minnesota Gophers. The Buckeyes were led by 116 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Chris Wells and 209 yards passing and two TD tosses from Todd Boeckman.

The Wisconsin Badgers moved up four spots as well to #5 after their 37-34 Big Ten victory over Michigan St. on Saturday. P.J. Hill carried the ball 34 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Badgers.

Jumping an amazing 12 spots this week to land at #6 are the South Florida Bulls. After their 21-13 beating of #5 West Virginia on Friday the Bulls continued their amazing run towards a national title. The Bulls forced six turnovers in the historic win.

Boston College moved up five spots to #7 this week despite an unimpressive win over Massachusetts on Saturday. Andre Callender rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns in the win while Matt Ryan passed for 204 yards and a TD.

The Kentucky Wildcats moved up to #8 after pounding FAU 45-17 on Saturday. Andre Woodson threw for a career-high five touchdown passes and totaled 301 yards through the air to lead the Wildcats. Kentucky racked up 514 yards of offense in the game.

Suffering their first loss of the year the Florida Gators tumbled from #4 to #9 this week. The Gators fell to the Auburn Tigers when Wes Byrum kicked a 43-yard field goal as time expired for a three-point win.

Following closely behind the Gators after a devastating loss are the Oklahoma Sooners who cling to the #10 spot in this week’s AP Top 25. The Sooners gave up 20 unanswered points to the Colorado Buffaloes in a 27-24 loss on Saturday.
