Philadelphia Phillies Looking for First World Series Title Since 1980

Atlanta, Ga. 10/1/2007 11:23:48 PM

Not since Tug McGraw struck out Kansas City’s Willie Wilson to end game six in the 1980 World Series have the Philadelphia Phillies been world champions. After Sunday’s events unfolded and the Phillies found themselves National League East champions they quickly became labeled “a team of destiny.”

While that sounds nice, and for the Boston Red Sox in 2004 and the Chicago White Sox in 2005 that title worked well, the Phillies are up against another team that may be a little more worthy of the “destiny” claim. At least there are people who are still alive since the last time the Phillies won it all. The Chicago Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908. Fans of the Cubs can tell the city of Philly the first 50 years of hoping are the hardest.

But this is a Philadelphia team that somehow managed to overcome a seven game deficit with 17 games left and win the National League East. While much of that may be credited to the New York Mets inexplicable collapse over the final three weeks of the season the truth is the Phillies had to win and they did.

Cole Hamels is the ace of the Phillies staff with 15 wins while Jamie Moyer, who some may say was actually at the Cubs last World Series celebration, picked up 14 wins. Outside of Hamels and Moyer there isn’t another pitcher on the staff with more than 10 wins.

Philadelphia isn’t too worried about their pitching when now that they enter post season with arguably the best offense in the National League. For all the fuss about Jose Reyes being the best leadoff hitter in the game there is nobody who had a bigger year than the Phillies Jimmy Rollins. Just look at the numbers and it’s clear; Rollins had 21 more hits (212-191), two more doubles (38-36), eight more triples (20-12), 18 more home runs (30-12), 37 more RBIs (94-57) and hit .296 compared to Reyes’ .280.

With Rollins setting the table the Phillies have relied on Aaron Rowand, Chase Utley, Pat Burrell and Ryan Howard to bring in the runs and the foursome have delivered. Utley finished third in the NL with 48 doubles on this year while Rowand was close behind with 45. The twosome also combined for 192 RBIs and 49 HRs between them with both hitting higher than .300.

The power surge came from Ryan Howard as the big man put up sensational numbers once again with 47 home runs and 136 RBIs. His RBI total was tops in the National League. Phillies fans will have to hope that Howard limits his strikeouts in the post season; he set a new major league record with 199 whiffs in 529 at-bats.

Fortunately for the Phillies they can also count on Pat Burrell to carry some weight. While many in Philadelphia would never admit to actually liking Burrell they all recognize that he hit 30 home runs and drove in 97 runs.

The Phillies will find out later today who they will face in the first round when Colorado and San Diego battle for the Wild Card ticket.
