The New England Patriots will take on the Cincinnati Bengals on ESPN's Monday Night Football this evening. The undefeated Patriots came into the season with high expectations. Many predicted them to go to the Super Bowl. Thus far, they are well on their way to meeting those predictions.
The Patriots have the NFL's best total offense and defense. Led by quarterback Tom Brady and newly acquired Randy Moss, the Patriots' offense has been picking defenses apart.
The Patriots and Bengals are two of the NFL's top passing and scoring offenses. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson and Moss are the league's leading receivers with 442 and 403 yards, respectively. With the inclusion of the Bengals' T. J. Houszmanzadeh, this game is going to be a high-powered passing attack for both teams.
Unlike the Bengals, the Patriots have a variety of options to pass to. Receivers Wes Welker, Donte' Stallworth and tight end Ben Watson will all receive many looks from Brady. They will spread the offense out and it will allow running back Laurence Maroney to find his holes against a Bengals defense that is 30th in scoring defense and total defense.
Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer will increasingly rely on the passing game this week, because running back Rudi Johnson is out. In most games, Palmer is a gunslinger. In comparison, he has thrown 37 more passes this season than Brady. However, this game, he will add to that number. It is imperative for the Patriots secondary, especially cornerback Asante Samuel, last year's interceptions leader, to lock down the Bengals talented receivers.
The offensive line for the Bengals must give Palmer the protection he needs to get his passes off. Coach Bill Belichick will look to blitz Palmer from various angles to confuse the former Heisman Trophy winner and force interceptions. They will also double-cover and press Johnson and Houszmandzadeh.
After the videotape scandal that the Patriots and coach Belichick was involved after this season's opener against the New York Jets, it is safe to say that the Patriots are winning games now based solely on their own merit.
