Colorado Rockies Beat San Diego Padres in 13th with Sacrifice Fly from Jamey Carroll

Atlanta, Ga. 10/2/2007 11:53:15 AM

Jamey Carroll came on as a pinch runner in the seventh inning and then ended the game in the 13th as he lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Matt Holliday from third capping a three run inning to give the Colorado Rockies a 9-8 win over the San Diego Padres and send them to the NL playoffs where they will face the Philadelphia Phillies.

After the Padres scored a pair of runs in the top of the 13th on a home run from Scott Hairston it looked as if the Rockies magical run of 13 wins in 14 games was over. As Trevor Hoffman came to the mound to pitch the bottom of the frame he carried with him the MLB record for saves and a solid record against the bats of the Rockies.

Kaz Matsui led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a double from Troy Tulowitzki setting the stage for Matt Holliday to lock up the NL batting crown. Holliday sent the first pitch he saw deep to right and just out of the reach of Brian Giles for a triple. With no outs Hoffman then walked Todd Helton setting the stage for Carroll.

Carroll sent Hoffman’s first offering to right field where Giles came up with the catch and fired to the plate after Holiday tagged on the play. With Holliday bearing down on the line catcher Michael Barrett appeared to block the plate when the Rockies left fielder went in head first. As the ball scooted past Barrett and Holliday lay on his back with a busted chin home plate umpire Tim McClelland made no call. Barrett quickly scooped the ball up and applied a tag to Holliday but McClelland signaled safe and sent the capacity crowd at Coors Field into a frenzy.

The Rockies will now travel to Philadelphia where they will play the Phillies.
