Florida Gators Safety Tony Joiner Arrested and Charged with Felony Burglary

Atlanta, Ga. 10/3/2007 5:03:46 AM

In an interesting turn of events Florida Gators safety Tony Joiner was arrested on Tuesday morning and charged with felony burglary despite the apparent victim’s insistence that the whole episode was ridiculous.

According to the police report Joiner had gone down to Watson’s Towing around 5:00 a.m. in an effort to retrieve his girlfriend’s impounded car. When he arrived there had been no attendant on duty so he pushed open an electronic gate, found the car and drove it out of the fenced lot. When he exited the car to shut the gate he was approached by a man who witnessed the event at which time Joiner drove car back into the lot and waited for the police.

While police insisted that Joiner committed a crime the property owner that houses Watson’s Towing claimed that Joiner had arranged to pick up the vehicle. Stan Forron told police that the Gators safety had spoken with the towing company’s dispatcher about retrieving the car but when he arrived at the lot the attendant was not on the property.

Forron said that Joiner had intended to pay for the $76 towing bill but when the attendant couldn’t be found he opted to take the car with plans on paying the bill at a later time.

Despite Forron’s account of the story Joiner was arrested and charged. An arrest that Forron told Florida Today didn’t make much sense, “The towing company just wants their money, not anything else. This kid should not have been arrested for what he did. To me, that's just crazy.”

While Forron found the arrest “crazy,” Lt. Keith Kameg saw it differently as he told the paper, “"He did not have permission to enter. When you attempt to move a car that is impounded it's burglary.”
