AP Top 25: #8 Kentucky Travels to #11 South Carolina for Surprising SEC East Showdown Thursday

Atlanta, GA 10/3/2007 10:51:29 PM

In any other year, Kentucky playing South Carolina in football is just a game in which each team is playing to barely make it to a bowl game. This year, the #8 Wildcats and the #11 Gamecocks are playing for much more when they hit the field on Thursday.

The surprising power matchup between the two programs will draw a lot of attention in the SEC and nationwide.

The Wildcats, who already have two big wins against Louisville (40-34) and Arkansas (42-29), are looking to defeat their third ranked opponent thus far this season. With Heisman Trophy candidate Andre Woodson at the helm, Kentucky has a great chance in doing so.

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier compared Woodson to former Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer, currently starring for the Cincinnati Bengals. Woodson had his NCAA record streak of 325 attempts without an interception stopped against Florida Atlantic last week. Still, he threw a career-best five TD passes in Kentucky's 45-17 victory.

Although the Wildcats' passing offense has received much of the acclaim on offense, it's their rushing game that is amongst the best in the nation, ranking 15th in the nation and second in the SEC. Thus far, they average 46.6 points a game, which leads the SEC.

Spurrier and his team looks to be the biggest threat to Woodson and the Wildcats' passing game thus far this season. The Gamecocks have the nation's best passing defense, only giving up 106.4 yards through the air per game.

The Gamecocks offense have made a significant change. Freshman Chris Smelley took over the starting quarterback position from Blake Mitchell. Smelley answered with 279 yards and two TD passes to receiver Kenny McKinley in the Gamecocks' 38-21 win over Mississippi State last Saturday.

There are a couple of streaks at stake. The Wildcats have won 10 of their past 11 games. South Carolina hasn't lost to Kentucky since 1999, winning the past seven games. Spurrier hasn't lost to the Wildcats period, a perfect 14-0 in his career at Florida and South Carolina.

No team other than Florida, Georgia and Tennessee has represented the SEC East in the SEC Title Game. This year, it is a great possibility that this could change.
