MLB Playoffs: Boston Red Sox Welcome LA Angles to Fenway Park for Game 1

Atlanta, Ga. 10/3/2007 11:36:00 PM

When the Boston Red Sox open their playoff series against the LA Angels on Wednesday there will no doubt be a scent of familiarity. Many at Fenway will be hoping to catch that scent once again. In 2004, the year the Red Sox buried “The Curse of the Bambino” and won their first World Series crown in 86 years it was the LA Angles that started it all. Boston swept the Angles in the first round that year and then went on to beat the New York Yankees in the ALCS before sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals.

Josh Beckett will do his best to put the Red Sox on track for their second title in four years as he squared off against the Angels ace John Lackey.

Beckett finished the regular season as the only 20-game-winner in MLB (20-7) and carried a 3.37 ERA making him a frontrunner for the American League Cy Young Award. Beckett will have a formidable lineup to face but the Angels are a bit battered with Vladimir Guerrero suffering a sore triceps muscle while Chone Figgins may be suffering from a wrist injury. While the duo may be a bit banged up thy have both put together sensational seasons, Guerrero (.324-27-125), Figgins (.330-3-58) as have Orlando Cabrera (.301-8-86) and Gary Matthews Jr. (.252-18-72).

While Beckett hit the 20-win plateau Lackey was close behind with a 19-9 record with a 3.01 ERA.

Two of those losses came in his only outings against the Red Sox this year as he finished with an 8.38 ERA while facing a dominant offense led by David Ortiz (.332-35-117), Manny Ramirez (.296-20-88), Mike Lowell (.324-21-120) and Dustin Pedroia (.317-8-50). Much like the Angels, the Red Sox have had their stars suffer ailments over the course of the year but they should be ready when Beckett delivers the first pitch this evening.

In an interesting note the Angles have lost 10 of 11 games in which Lackey has started against Boston.

Game time is set for 6:30 pm ET.
