Rockies Plate Three in Second to Beat Phillies in Game One

Atlanta, Ga. 10/4/2007 9:05:04 AM

The Colorado Rockies scored three runs in the second inning and starter Jeff Francis pitched six strong innings to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 in game one of their National League playoff series.

Colorado got to Phillies starter Cole Hamels in the second inning when Garrett Atkins doubled home Todd Helton for the games first run. Yorvit Torrealba then singled home Atkins and Hamels then walked Kaz Matsui to load the bases. Troy Tulowitzki then drew a walk that drove in Ryan Spilborghs and the Rockies were up 3-0.

The Phillies scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning when Aaron Rowand and Par Burrell hit solo shots to cut the Rockies lead to 3-2 but that was as close as they would get.

Despite a 13 inning marathon against the San Diego Padres just two days ago in which Colorado was forced to turn to their relievers the bullpen stepped up yet again and shut down the Phillies for three innings. Both LaTroy Hawkins and Brian Fuentes pitched hitless innings before Manny Corpas came on to pitch a perfect ninth for the save,

Matt Holliday provided the insurance run for the Rockies with a solo homer in the eighth off Tom Gordon.

The win marked Colorado’s 15th win in their last 16 games.

Game two will be played tomorrow in Philadelphia at 3:00 pm ET.
