Stephen Drew and Mark Reynolds hit solo homeruns while Brandon Webb threw seven strong innings allowing just four hits and one run and striking out nine as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on Wednesday night to take a 1-0 advantage in their National League playoff series.
Drew gave the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead in the third inning when he sent a Carlos Zambrano delivery over the centerfield wall. That lead held up until Ryan Theriot plated Geovany Soto with a two-out infield single in the top of the fifth.
Zambrano was lifted before the bottom of the seventh and Carlos Marmol came on in relief but gave Mark Reynolds greeted him with a long homerun to left that put the Diamondbacks in front 2-1. After Jeff Salazar struck out Marmol walked Chris Snyder and then gave up a double to Augie Ojeda to put runners on second and third. Conor Jackson then hit a sacrifice fly to center to provide
Brandon Lyon came on in relief of Webb in the top of the eight and retired the side and Jose Valverde took the hill in the ninth to close the door on game one.
Both teams will play again on Thursday night at 10:00 pm ET.
