Rockies Take 2-0 Series Lead with Win Over Phillies

Atlanta, Ga. 10/5/2007 7:28:23 AM

Kaz Matsui hit a go-ahead grand slam in the 4th inning and added a triple and double to his line as the Colorado Rockies overcame a three inning performance from starter Franklin Morales to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 10-5 and take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five playoff series.

Troy Tulowitzki and Matt Holliday put the Rockies in front in the first inning with back-to-back home runs off Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick. Jimmy Rollins was able to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun and then put Philadelphia in front 3-2 with a two-run triple in the second.

Kendrick labored into the fourth and after giving up a leadoff double to Garrett Atkins he retired the next two batters. After intentionally walking Yorvit Torrealba and giving up an infield single to Seth Smith the Phillies starter gave up the big blow to Matsui.

Colorado was able to put the game away in the sixth with another four-run inning highlighted by a two-run double from Torreabla, a run scoring triple from Matsui and a single from Holliday that plated Matsui for a 10-3 lead.

The series will now shift to Colorado where the Rockies will try to close the Phillies out on Saturday. Game time is set for 9:30 pm ET.
