Indians Rough Up Wang to Beat Yankees in Game One

Atlanta, Ga. 10/5/2007 9:52:18 AM

Victor Martinez went 3-5 with a home run and Kenny Lofton finished 3-4 with 4 RBIs as the Cleveland Indians battered Chien-Ming Wang around for eight runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings going on to beat the New York Yankees 12-3 to take game one of their best-of-five series.

Johnny Damon put the Yankees in front 1-0 in the top of the first with a homerun off C.C. Sabathia but the Indians quickly answered in the bottom half of the first with a run scoring single from Ryan Garko and a two-run single from Kenny Lofton.

Cleveland added to their lead in the third when Asdrubal Cabrera hit a solo shot off Wang to make the score 4-1.

New York pulled to within one with runs in the fourth and fifth innings only to see the Indians tack on five runs in the fifth inning for a 10-3 advantage. Martinez started the scoring with a two-run homer and Casey Blake finished the big inning with a two-run double.

While Sabathia completed five innings he wasn’t exactly sharp as he walked six and gave up three runs on four hits while throwing 114 pitches. Fortunately for the Indians their bullpen combined to throw four innings of one hit ball to finish the Yankees off.
