The Arizona Diamondbacks answered the Chicago Cubs two-run second inning with four runs in the bottom half of the frame and went on to win 8-4 and now lead the best-of-five series 2-0.
Geovany Soto put the Cubs on the board with a two-run homer in the second off Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis but Arizona quickly answered with a three-run homer from Chris Young and a run scoring triple from Eric Byrnes as Cubs starter Ted Lilly struggled in his 3 1/3 innings of work.
After Juan Cruz retired the final out of the sixth for the Diamondbacks Tony Pena retired the Cubs in the seventh and Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless eighth. Jose Valverde then came on to shut the door in the ninth.
The Cubs tried to make things interesting in the ninth with Alfonso Soriano getting a one-out single and Ryan Theriot reaching on an error but Valverde was able to strike out Derek Lee and Aramis Ramirez to end the game.
