Travis Hafner Drives in Winning Run in Bottom of 11th as Cleveland Takes 2-0 Lead Over Yankees

Atlanta, Ga. 10/6/2007 9:09:22 AM

Travis Hafner drove in the game-winning run with a single on a 3-2 count in the bottom of the 11th to lift the Cleveland Indians past the New York Yankees 2-1 and now hold a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-five playoff series.

Both starters looked brilliant as Andy Pettitte tossed 6 1/3 innings of six hit ball without allowing a run while Fausto Carmona threw nine innings of three hit ball and allowing just one run, a third inning homer to Melky Cabrera.

It was the Cabrera blast that gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead as Pettitte continued to keep the Indians off the board but when manager Joe Torre turned the ball over to Joba Chamberlain it looked like the rookie felt the pressure. After getting the final two outs in the seventh Chamberlain ran into problems in the eighth as he walked Grady Sizemore to start the inning. Sizemore moved up to second on a wild pitch and then advanced to third on a sacrifice from Asdrubal Cabrera. Chamberlain was able to strike out Hafner but then threw another wild pitch that Sizemore scored on to tie the game at 1-1.

Cleveland had a chance to win the game in the 10th when they loaded the bases with two outs but Mariano Rivera was able to strike out Jhonny Peralta to end the threat. Luis Vizcaino wasn’t as fortunate in the 11th as he gave up a leadoff walk to Kenny Lofton and Franklin Guitierrez singled to left to put runners at first and second. Casey Blake moved the runners up one bag with a sacrifice and Sizemore was intentionally walked to load the bases. It looked like New York would escape the inning after Vizcaino got Cabrera to pop up to third but that just set up the heroics of Hafner. After working the count full Hafner delivered a fastball into right field and Lofton crossed the plate for the win.

It was another slow night with the bats for the Yankees who have managed just eight hits in the first two games. Alex Rodriguez is once again hearing it about his failure to produce in the post-season as he is now hitless in six at-bats, he struck out three times in Friday night’s game. Derek Jeter is struggling a s well as he is now 1-8 in the series.

The series now shifts to New York where the two teams will play game three on Sunday at 6:30 pm ET.
