The New York Islanders opened their season in big fashion as Mike Comrie scored two goals and added a pair of assists while Ruslan Fedotenko added a goal and two assists to in their 6-4 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
It was Comrie’s wrist shot with four minutes left in the second period that gave the Islanders a 5-4 advantage and then Trent Hunter provided some added insurance in the third period when he scored on a power play.
Buffalo opened the scoring a Jaroslav Spacek goal three minutes into play and after Josef Vasicek tied it for the Islanders Derek Roy put the Sabres back in front 2-1.
Drew Stafford was able to tie the score with two minutes remaining in the first period but Comrie was the difference in the second with his two goals.
The Islanders are now 1-0-0 while the Sabres opened the season 0-1-0.
