Danny Vinik Finds His Way into Red Sox Lore
In all likelihood Jeff Mathis would have caught the foul ball off the bat of Manny Ramirez had the ‘Curse of the Bambino” not been lifted in 2004. As it stands the Red Sox no longer have to worry about losing due to the supernatural. Rather, their now catching the breaks, or at least one is, Danny Vinik.
It was Vinik who managed to outstretch Mathis in the fifth inning when Ramirez fouled off a Kelvim Escobar delivery. Mathis, leaning over the photographers’ booth behind the plate, appeared to have the ball but Vinik plucked the orb a fraction of a second before it could fall in the mitt of the Angels catcher for the second out.
With new life, Ramirez worked a walk to load the bases and Mike Lowell hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Dustin Pedroia and tie the game at 3-3.
Of course the 17-year-old Vinik was already signing autographs and shaking hands like a politician by the end of the inning and earned the good graces of Steven King who happened to be sitting just behind the youngster.
Prior to the at-bat Ramirez had been 0 for 2 on the night but Vinik may have reversed his fortunes. The Red Sox slugger drew another walk in the seventh and then hit the game-winning blast in the ninth off Francisco Rodriguez.
While Vinik’s contribution to the fate of the Red Sox may be overstated, for at least one night he was able to share the stage with Manny Ramirez and enjoy hero status in the city of
