Jacob Hester barreled into the endzone from 2 yards out with 1:09 left in the fourth quarter to give the #1 LSU Tigers a 28-24 victory over the #9 Florida Gators on Saturday night.
Hester finished with 106 yards on the ground and his fourth quarter score gave the Tigers their first lead of the game and capped a ten point comeback to ensure LSU would remain the country’s #1 team.
LSU took their opening drive of the second half 70 yards and pulled to within three when Keiland Williams ran it in from 4 yards out but the Gators answered once again with a Tebow to Cornelius Ingram for a 37 yard touchdown to push their lead back to ten, 24-14.
The fourth quarter started off looking as if the Tigers would relinquish their #1 ranking after Colt David missed a 37 yard field goal but after the Gators took over on their own 20 yard line things began to turn. Percy Harvin ran for four yards on first down but Tebow was picked off on second down by Kirston Pittman. LSU then took the ball 27 yards for a touchdown, the score coming on a 4th and 3 when quarterback Matt Flynn found Demetrius Byrd.
After forcing the Gators to punt on their next possession the Tiger began their fateful drive with 9:20 left in the game. LSU’s prospects looked grim when they faced a 3rd and 16 but Flynn scrambled for 15 yards to set up a 4th and 1 and then Hester pounded out the yard for a first down. Hester then broke for 19 yards on a 2nd and 10 to get the Tigers down to the Florida 16 yard line and then converted another 4th and 1 with a two yard stretched that gave the Tigers a first and goal from the five. Flynn threw an incompletion on first down and then Hester lowered his shoulder for a tough three on second down setting up a third and goal with 1:14 on the clock. Hester then went straight up the middle and lunged into the endzone for the go-ahead score, sending the LSU faithful into a frenzy.
Florida was forced to go 80 yards with just over a minute left in the game and it came down to a Tebow desperation hurl that was knocked down in the endzone to seal the win for LSU.
With the win the LSU Tigers improved to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in the SEC while
