It might not have been pretty but the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will take it. After knocking the UCLA Bruins starting quarterback Ben Olson out of the game in the first quarter the Irish defense collected seven turnovers, including a 34 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown from Maurice Crum Jr., to earn their first win of the year 20-6.
UCLA was forced to turn to walk-on quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson and the pressure on the freshman appeared to be too much as he threw four interceptions and was responsible for the fumble that Crum returned for a touchdown.
The Bruins led at halftime 6-3 after a pair of field goals from Kai Forbath but the Irish tied it up on a Brandon Walker field goal midway through the third quarter. Notre Dame then went ahead 13-6 when freshman quarterback Jimmy Clausen snuck into the endzone from 1 yard out and 50 seconds later Crum picked up the fumble and rumbled 34 yards for a 20-6 advantage.
To go with his fumble recovery, Crum collected two interceptions while David Bruton and Terrail Lambert had the other two picks.
