NFL Scores: John Kasay Kicks Game-Winning Field Goal for Panthers, Keeps Saints Winless
John Kasay kicked a 52-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Carolina Panthers past the New Orleans Saints 16-13 in the Superdome on Sunday.
The win improved the Panthers to 3-2 on the year while the loss kept the Saints winless, dropping them to 0-4 one year after playing in the NFC Championship game against the Chicago Bears.
For the first three quarters it looked as if the Saints would earn their first win as their defense held the Panthers to just a pair of Kasay field goals. As ineffective as the Panthers offense was, the Saints weren’t much better as they could manage just two field goals from Olindo Mare and a 2-yard touchdown run from Mike Karney for a 13-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
It was after the Panthers tying score that the Saints self-destructed as Drew Brees tossed an interception on their next possession, The Saints defense then stepped up and picked off Carr to give their offense a perfect field position on the Panthers 37 yard line. After Reggie Bush rushed for one yard, Brees tossed a pair of incomplete passes that set up a 52-yard field goal attempt from Mare.
That attempt went wide left and gave the ball to the Panthers with 2:14 remaining in the game. Carolina was able to converts two third down possession to get down to the 35 yard line and give Kasay a shot with three seconds left on the clock. A shot the 17-year vet nailed to win the game.
