Curt Schilling pitched seven innings of six-hit ball and didn’t allow a run and the Boston Red Sox bats exploded for seven runs in the eighth to beat the LA Angels 9-1 on Sunday and complete a 3-0 sweep of their first round series.
The Red Sox broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with back-to-back home runs from David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez off Angels starter Jered Weaver. That was all Schilling would need as he kept the Angels out of scoring position up until the seventh.
With LA trailing in the bottom of the seventh Maicer Izturis led the bottom half of the frame with a double but Schilling got Howie Kendrick to ground out to second, Juan Rivera popped out to first and Mike Napoli struck out swinging.
Hideki Okajima relieved Schilling and pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Eric Gagne came on to shut the door in the ninth, allowing one run on one hit.
