Schilling Shuts Down Angels Bats as Red Sox Sweep Their Way to ALCS

Atlanta, Ga. 10/8/2007 6:31:47 AM

Curt Schilling pitched seven innings of six-hit ball and didn’t allow a run and the Boston Red Sox bats exploded for seven runs in the eighth to beat the LA Angels 9-1 on Sunday and complete a 3-0 sweep of their first round series.

The Red Sox broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with back-to-back home runs from David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez off Angels starter Jered Weaver. That was all Schilling would need as he kept the Angels out of scoring position up until the seventh.

With LA trailing in the bottom of the seventh Maicer Izturis led the bottom half of the frame with a double but Schilling got Howie Kendrick to ground out to second, Juan Rivera popped out to first and Mike Napoli struck out swinging.

Boston then came to the plate in the top of the eighth ready to swing their sticks and platted seven runs on five hits and two walks off of three Angels relievers. Dustin Pedroia drove in the first run with a double to bring Julio Lugo around from first. With Pedroia on third Kevin Youkalis hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield and the Red Sox were in front 4-0. Ortiz followed with a single and Ramirez then walked to put runners on first and second. Mike Lowell then served a double to left that scored Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury, running for Ramirez, advanced to third. J.D. Drew grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Ellsbury when Kendry Morales’s throw to the plate was off line and the Red Sox had runners at first and third. Jason Varitek then doubled home Lowell and put Drew on third and Coco Crisp singled to center to score both of them for a 9-0 lead.

Hideki Okajima relieved Schilling and pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Eric Gagne came on to shut the door in the ninth, allowing one run on one hit.

The Red Sox will now take on the winner of the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees series. First game will be in Boston on Friday night.
