AP Top 25 Rankings Week 6: LSU Tigers Unanimous #1 After Another Top 10 Shakeup

Atlanta, Ga. 10/8/2007 8:16:45 AM

For the second consecutive week the country’s best college football teams suffered major upsets and shook up the AP Top 25, opening the door for some new entrants. No bigger upset occurred this week than the Stanford Cardinal knocking off #2 USC Trojans. But the Trojans weren’t alone as the Wisconsin Badgers, Kentucky Wildcats and Florida Gators found themselves standing on the outside looking in.

There was no doubt the LSU Tigers would earn a unanimous #1 ranking after beating the #9 Florida Gators 28-24 on Saturday night. Jacob Hester rushed for 106 yards and scored the winning touchdown with just over a minute remaining in the game to cap a 10-point comeback against the Gators. LSU will travel to #17 Kentucky next Saturday

Despite having a week off the California Golden Bears moved up one spot and claimed the #2 position in the AP Top 25. The Golden Bears will face Oregon State on Saturday.

Also jumping a spot in the AP Top 25 courtesy of the USC loss was the Ohio State Buckeyes who now sit at #3. The Buckeyes had no problem handling the #23 Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday as they beat their Big Ten for 23-7. Ohio State will face Kent State on Saturday.

Jumping three spots in the AP Top 25 this week are the Boston College Eagles. The new #4 earned the bump after quarterback Matt Ryan threw four touchdowns in a 55-24 pounding of the Bowling Green Falcons on Saturday.  Boston College will travel to South Bend next Saturday to face Notre Dame.

After cracking the Top 10 for the first time in school history last week the South Florida Bulls cracked the Top 5 this week after Benjamin Williams rushed for 186 yards and four touchdowns in their 35-23 victory over the FAU Owls. South Florida will face Central Florida next Saturday.

Back into the national title picture this week are the #6 Oklahoma Sooners who jumped four spots after beating the #19 Texas Longhorns 28-21 on Saturday. Sam Bradford led the way as he threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns in the game. Oklahoma will host the #11 Missouri Tigers next week.

Steve Spurrier continues to direct the South Carolina Gamecocks in the right direction as they jumped four spots to #7 after they beat then #8 Kentucky 38-23 last Thursday night. South Carolina forced four turnovers, returning two for touchdowns, in the SEC battle. South Carolina will travel to UNC next Saturday.

The West Virginia Mountaineers returned to the AP Top 10 this week after pounding Syracuse 55-14 on Saturday to move up to #8 in the rankings. West Virginia rolled up 486 yards of total offense against the Orange and held their opponent to just 202 yards of offense. The Mountaineers will take on Mississippi State in two weeks.

Moving up five spots without snapping the ball are the Oregon Ducks who landed at #9 this week. They’re actually ranked higher now than they were when they last played, and lost, to the California Golden Bears. Oregon will face Washington State on Saturday.

Suffering a humiliating 24-23 loss to the Stanford Cardinal dropped the USC Trojans from #2 to #10 in the AP Top 25. USC had nearly twice as many yards offensively as the Cardinal but committed five turnovers in the game, four of those were interceptions out of the hand of John David Booty. USC will host Arizona next week.
