Johnny Damon Leads New York Yankees Past Cleveland Indians in Must Win Game 3

Atlanta, Ga. 10/8/2007 9:48:05 AM

Facing elimination after dropping their first two games in Cleveland the New York Yankees managed to overcome an early 3-0 and force a game four with an 8-4 victory on Sunday night.

Things looked rough for the Yankees as starter Roger Clemens was forced out of the game after aggravating a hamstring injury after 2 1/3 innings. Clemens had surrendered 3 runs and four hits while on the mound.

Trailing 3-0 the Yankees turned to Phil Hughes who was able to throw 3 2/3 scoreless innings including the last 2/3 when Clemens left in the top of the third. With the change from Clemens came a change in the Yankees bats as New York found some life in the bottom of the third.

Johnny Damon singled home Hideki Matsui to breath life into what’s been a mostly silent offense in the series and the score was 3-1.

Hughes continued to shut down the Indians bats and when the Yankees came to the plate in the fifth they finally grabbed the lead after Damon followed a run scoring single from Melky Cabrera with a three-run homer off Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook and the Yankees were in front 5-3.

New York broke the game open in the sixth when a Robinson Cano single to right got under the glove of Trot Nixon and scored Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada and Matsui for an 8-3 advantage.

Joba Chamberlain came on in the top of the seventh and pitched two innings, allowing a run in the eighth after Jhonny Peralta scored on a Nixon double to center. New York turned the ball over to Mariano Rivera in the ninth and he pitched a perfect frame with two strikeouts.

Game four will be played on Monday night at 8:00 pm. ET in New York.
