Facing elimination after dropping their first two games in
Things looked rough for the Yankees as starter Roger Clemens was forced out of the game after aggravating a hamstring injury after 2 1/3 innings. Clemens had surrendered 3 runs and four hits while on the mound.
Trailing 3-0 the Yankees turned to Phil Hughes who was able to throw 3 2/3 scoreless innings including the last 2/3 when Clemens left in the top of the third. With the change from Clemens came a change in the Yankees bats as
Johnny Damon singled home Hideki Matsui to breath life into what’s been a mostly silent offense in the series and the score was 3-1.
Hughes continued to shut down the Indians bats and when the Yankees came to the plate in the fifth they finally grabbed the lead after Damon followed a run scoring single from Melky Cabrera with a three-run homer off Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook and the Yankees were in front 5-3.
Joba Chamberlain came on in the top of the seventh and pitched two innings, allowing a run in the eighth after Jhonny Peralta scored on a Nixon double to center.
Game four will be played on Monday night at 8:00 pm. ET in
