Sunday Night Football: Brian Griese Stages Fourth Quarter Rally as Bears Beat Packers

Atlanta, Ga. 10/8/2007 11:11:08 AM

Brian Griese threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Desmond Clark on a 3rd and 2 play with 2:11 left in the fourth quarter to give the Chicago Bears a 27-20 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.

The win improved the Chicago Bears record to 2-3 on the year while the Packers suffered their first loss and fell to 4-1 on the season.

It looked as if the Packers would control the game early as they combined a strong running attack with the arm of Brett Favre to keep the Bears off balance. DeShawn Wynn was the featured running back in Green Bay’s backfield and he capped am opening game drive with a 2-yard touchdown for an early 7-0 lead.

After forcing the Bears to a three and out the Packers again moved the ball down the field and looked ready to score but after Favre hit James Jones on an 11-yard pass the rookie wide receiver fumbled and the Bears recovered.

Once again the Bears were three and out and once again the Packers were driving when Favre hit Jones and he fumbled for the second straight possession.

Chicago was finally able to get on the board with a field goal in the second quarter but a Green Bay penalty gave the Bears a first down and rather than take the three they opted to look for the endzone and it paid off as Cedric Benson pounded it in from 10-yards out and the score was tied 7-7.

Green Bay answered on their next possession with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Favre to Greg Jennings and they later tacked on a field goal just before halftime and they held a 17-7 lead at the break.

Both teams traded field goals in their opening possessions of the second half but Chicago was then given a gift as Favre was picked off on the Green Bay 19-yard-line and on their first play Griese hit Greg Olsen for a touchdown and the Packers lead was cut to 20-17.

Robbie Gould then tied the game with a 36-yard field goal early in the fourth and the Bears defense shut down then shut down the Packers offense. Three straight possessions the Packers were held to three and outs and when Chicago took over with 5:27 left in the game Griese led them down the field for the game winner.
