Indians Strike Early, Beat Yankees to Advance to ALCS

Atlanta, Ga. 10/9/2007 11:42:01 AM

Cleveland made New York manager Joe Torre pay for putting Chien-Ming Wang back on the mound as they knocked the Yankees starter around for four runs on five hits in one full inning of work as the Indians went on to win 6-4 on Monday night to take their ALDS series 3-1 and advance to play the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS on Friday.

Grady Sizemore, who finished the series hitting .375, led off the game with a home run to center and the Indians were able to tack on another run in the top of the first when Jhonny Peralta’s two-out single plated Travis Hafner.

The second inning was no easier for Wang as he gave up back-to-back singles to Franklin Gutierrez and Casey Blake before hitting Kelly Shoppach to load the bases. Torre lifted Wang for Mike Mussina who came in and immediately got Sizemore to hit into a double play that scored Gutierrez and moved Blake to third. The Indians then got another two-out run when Asdrubal Cabrera dropped a single into center and Cleveland was in front 4-0.

New York had a golden opportunity to do some damage in the bottom half of the second after Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano reached safely but Melky Cabrera popped out to third. After Indians starter Paul Byrd walked Doug Mientkiewicz he then got Johnny Damon to foul out. Derek Jeter then got an infield single to plate Matsui but Bobby Abreu flew out to center to end the inning.

Byrd got out of trouble in the third after Jorge Posada doubled with one out but the veteran righty got Matsui to ground out to first before Robinson Cano flew out to center.

Cleveland came to the plate in the top of the top of the fourth and put the Yankees in a 6-1 hole when Victor Martinez singled home Shoppach and Sizemore with a bases loaded single.

The Yankees wouldn’t score again until the sixth when Cabrera led off the inning with a home run. Byrd was then lifted after allowing two runs on eight hits in five complete innings. Rafael Perez came to the hill and gave up back-to-back singles after getting one out but Jeter grounded into an inning-ending double play to keep the Yankees off the board.

Alex Rodriguez was able to hit a one-out homer in the seventh to cut he Indians lead to 6-3 but the Yankees’ bats again failed to produce a big inning as Perez got Jorge Posada to ground out to third and Cano to ground out to first.

Rafael Betancourt pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Indians before Joe Borowski came on in the ninth to close the book on the Yankees season. Borowski got Jeter to pop out to second but Abreu hit a bomb into the upper deck in right to put the score at 6-4. Borowski showed no signs of nerves though as he got Rodriguez to fly out to right and then struck out Posada to end the game

Cleveland will now travel to Boston to take on the Red Sox in game one of the ALCS on Friday.
