Rockies Continue to Roll as They Beat Diamondbacks in Game One of NLCS

Atlanta, Ga. 10/12/2007 12:15:43 PM

Jeff Francis threw 7 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and just one run and Brad Hawpe went 2-3 driving in two big runs in the third inning as the Colorado Rockies beat Brandon Webb the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 on Thursday night to take game one of their best-of-seven NLCS series.

The Diamondbacks struck first in the bottom of the first when Eric Byrnes doubled home Stephen Drew but that would be the last run Arizona would plate off Francis and a quartet of Colorado relievers who allowed just two hits.

In the top of the second inning Colorado had a golden opportunity to put runs on the board as the loaded the bases with no out but managed just one run after Troy Tulowitzki hit into a double play and Yorvit Torrealba went down on strikes

Colorado then grabbed the lead in the third inning when Kaz Matsui singled home Willy Taveras to push the score to 2-1. After Matt Holiday reached on an infield single and Todd Helton flied out Webb walked Garrett Atkins to load the bases. Hawpe then delivered a two out single that drove home Matsui and Holliday for a 4-1 lead.

The Rockies were able to tack on another run in the seventh when Torrealba came around to score on an error from first baseman Conor Jackson.

The win was the Rockies 18th in their last 19 games.

Both teams will meet again on Friday night in Arizona with game time set for 10:18 pm ET.
