Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz Lead Offensive Onslaught as Red Sox Drill Indians in Game One

Atlanta, Ga. 10/13/2007 10:38:56 AM

Manny Ramirez went 2-2 with three RBIs and walked three times while David Ortiz went 2-2 while walking twice as the Boston Red Sox pounded the Cleveland Indians 10-3 in game one of the ALCS on Friday night.

The Red Sox tagged Indians’ ace C.C. Sabathia, knocking the lefty around for eight runs on seven hits and collecting five walks over 4 1/3 innings.

Sabathia was staked to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Travis Hafner homered off Red Sox starter Josh Beckett but Boston tied the score in the bottom of the first when Manny Ramirez drove in Kevin Youkilis with a one-out single.

Boston broke out in the third inning as Julio Lugo led off the inning with a ground rule double. After Dustin Pedroia moved Lugo to third on a sacrifice Youkilis drew a walk and Ortiz was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Manny then drew a walk to plate Lugo and Mike Lowell then hit a ground rule double that scored Youkilis and Ortiz.  Jason Varitek made it 5-1 when his ground out to third scored Ramirez.

For his part Beckett through six strong innings, allowing to runs on four hits as he continued his post season brilliance. After giving up the homer to Hafner in the first Beckett retired the next ten Indians before hitting Ryan Garko to lead off the fifth. Beckett then induced a double play from Jhonny Peralta and after Kenny Lofton doubled he collected his seventh strike out, catching Franklin Gutierrez looking.

In the bottom of the fifth the Red Sox put three more runs up as Bobby Kielty drove in two with a single and Varitek then drove Kielty home with a double to give Boston an 8-1 advantage.

Both teams will meet again on Saturday as Fausto Carmona takes the hill for the Indians and Curt Schilling gets the ball for the Sox. Game time is set for 8:00 pm ET.
