Colorado Rockies Do It Again, Beat Diamondbacks for 19th win in Last 20 Games

Atlanta, Ga. 10/13/2007 11:26:46 PM

Willy Taveras drew a two-out bases loaded walk off Jose Valverde to bring in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th and Ryan Speier retired the Diamondbacks in order in the bottom of the 11th as the Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven NLCS series.

The win was the Rockies 19th in their last 20, an amazing stretch that began the last month of the regular season and has continued through the postseason. Colorado has yet to lose in the playoffs after sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies in three games.

On Friday night Colorado struck in the top of the second inning when Yorvit Torrealba drove home Helton with a two-out single off Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis. That lead held up until the bottom of the third when Davis helped himself with a leadoff double. Chris Young drove him in with a single and the game was tied.

Colorado took the lead in the top of the fifth when Todd Helton drove home Willy Taveras with a sacrifice fly and the 2-1 lead held up until the ninth.

Arizona managed to tie the score in the bottom of the ninth, but blew an opportunity to win the game with a base running error by Stephen Drew. After retiring the Miguel Montero on a ground out to short Rockies closer Manny Corpas hit Chris Young on a 1-2 pitch. Drew then followed with a single to right-center to put runners on first and third.

Eric Byrnes followed with a soft grounder to second that plated Young and resulted in Drew being called safe on a close play at second. Drew thought he was called out on the play and began running back to the Diamondbacks dugout when he was tagged at third for the second out. Valverde then got Tony Clark to ground out to end the inning.

Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez threw five strong innings, allowing just one run and five hits while Matt Herges, LaTroy Hawkins and Brian Fuentes pitched scoreless innings in the sixth, seventh and eighth before Corpas came on in the ninth.

The series will now shift to Colorado where the two teams will meet on Sunday. Game time is set for 8:30 pm ET.
