AP Top 25 Rankings Week 7: Ohio State Buckeyes and South Florida Bulls Take Top Two Spots

In the ever changing rankings in this year’s college football season the new AP Top 25 Rankings once again took a new twist on Sunday as the Ohio State Buckeyes and the South Florida Bulls moved into top spots after LSU and California fell over the weekend.

 

The newly minted #1 Ohio State Buckeyes had little trouble pounding the Kent State Golden Flashes on Saturday as they rolled to an easy 48-3 victory. Todd Boeckman threw for threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns in the win. The Buckeyes will host the Michigan State Spartans next week.

 

South Florida jumped three spots to claim the #2 spot in the AP Top 25 after rolling past the UCF Knights 64-12 on Saturday. The Bulls rolled up 543 yards of offense as quarterback Matt Grothe threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns while running for another 100 yards and a pair of TDs. South Florida will travel to Rutgers for a Big East match-up on Thursday night.

 

Boston College moved up one spot to #3 after beating Notre Dame on Saturday. Andre Callender had 90 yards rushing and two touchdowns and added another 91 yards and a score receiving in the 27-14 win. The Eagles defense held the Irish running game to just 27 yards. Boston College will have a week off before facing Virginia Tech on October 25.

 

The Oklahoma Sooners advanced another two spots this week and landed at #4 after their 41-31 win over the Missouri Tigers on Saturday. The Sooners defense forced four turnovers in the game and Chris Brown rushed for 67 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter to key the victory. The Sooners will play on the road against Iowa State next Saturday.

 

Dropping to #5 this week after falling to the Kentucky Wildcats, are the LSU Tigers. The Tigers had a 13 point advantage late in the third quarter but allowed the Wildcats back into the game and fell in triple overtime when four straight rushing plays failed to produce a first down. LSU will host Auburn on Saturday.

 

The South Carolina Gamecocks inched up one spot to #6 in this week’s AP Top 25 Rankings. The Gamecocks beat North Carolina 21-15 on Saturday as Chris Smelley threw for 172 yards and three touchdowns in the game. South Carolina will host Vanderbilt on Saturday in a big SEC battle.

 

After demolishing the Washington State Cougars 53-7 on Saturday the Oregon Ducks jumped two spots to #7 this week. Dennis Dixon threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns and added another on the ground in the blowout. Next Saturday the Ducks will travel to Washington to take on the Huskies in Pac-10 action.

 

Vaulting nine spots this week up to #8 are the Kentucky Wildcats who are coming off a triple overtime upset victory over the LSU Tigers. Andre Woodson was key in the 43-37 victory with 250 yards passing and three touchdowns while running for another TD. The Wildcats will host the Florida Gators next week in what could determine the SEC East champion.

 

The week off cost West Virginia one spot as the Mountaineers fell one spot to #9 in this week’s AP Top 25. West Virginia will host the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday.

 

After suffering a devastating 41-38 loss to the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday due to a costly mistake by redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Riley, the California Golden Bears dropped eight spots to #10 this week. California will travel to UCLA next Saturday in a big Pac-10 showdown.
