Tony Gonzalez broke Shannon Sharpe’s NFL record for touchdown receptions by a tight end early in the first quarter and went on to add another in the fourth as the Kansas City Chiefs held on to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 27-20 on Sunday.
The win pushed the Chiefs to .500 at 3-3 while the loss dropped the disappointing Bengals to 1-4.
Gonzalez caught TD No. 63 in the first quarter to give the Chiefs a 10-7 advantage and Larry Johnson pushed the lead to 17-7 after an 8-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Johnson finally had a breakout game as he rumbled for 119 yards on 31 carries.
Carson Palmer, who threw for 320 yards in the game, found T.J. Houshmandzadeh on a 30-yard TD pass with 5:03 left in the game.
