Rockies Use Longball to Drop Diamondbacks, Pull to within One of World Series Ticket

Atlanta, Ga. 10/15/2007 1:05:13 PM

Matt Holliday got things started for the Colorado Rockies with a homerun in the first inning and Yorvit Torrealba hit a three-run blast in the sixth to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 on Sunday night and take a 3-0 lead in their NLCS series.

Josh Fogg pitched six strong innings on a rainy night in Colorado, allowing seven hits and just one run.

That one run came in the top of the fourth inning when Mark Reynolds hit a homerun to left field that tied the score at 1-1.

After giving up the homerun to Holliday, Diamondbacks starter Livan Hernandez settled down and managed to keep the Rockies off the board for four innings. It wouldn’t last. In the bottom of the sixth Hernandez walked Todd Helton to lead off the inning. Garrett Atkins lined out to centerfield but Brad Hawpe singled to right to move Helton up to second. Hernandez then caught Troy Tulowitzki looking and looked like he might get out of the inning unscathed. Instead he delivered a 3-2 pitch that Torrealba sent into the seats just beyond the leftfield wall and the Rockies pulled ahead 4-1.

Colorado then turned to their bullpen and once again they delivered as Jeremy Affeldt pitched a perfect seventh inning and Brian Fuentes had little trouble in the eight. The Rockies then handed the ball to Manny Corpas who retired the Diamondbacks in order to earn his fourth save of the postseason.

Colorado will have a chance to wrap up the series on Monday when the two teams meet at 10:00 pm ET.
