Rockies Use Six Run Fourth Inning to Beat Diamondbacks, Sweep Their Way into World Series

Atlanta, Ga. 10/16/2007 1:15:17 PM

The Colorado Rockies trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth inning but put six runs on the board in the decisive inning to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 on Monday night and sweep their best-of-seven NLCS series 4-0. The win put the Colorado Rockies in the World Series for the first time in franchise history.

Arizona put the first run on the board in the second inning when Chris Young singled home pitcher Micah Owings for a 1-0 advantage.

On the mound Owings looked effective over the first three innings as he worked his way out of two-out trouble without allowing any runs but his luck would turn in the bottom of the fourth.

After getting leadoff hitter Garrett Atkins to fly out, Owens walked Brad Hawpe and Troy Tulowitzki to put runners on first and second. Owens then got Yorvit Torrealba to ground out for the second out. Sensing this was the time to jump on Owens, manager Clint Hurdle lifted staring pitcher Franklin Morales for pinch hitter Seth Smith who rewarded the Rockies skipper with a double that plated Hawpe and Tulowitzki. Willy Taveras then reached on an error by first baseman Conor Jackson and Smith moved to third on the play. Owens then gave up a single to Kaz Matsui that scored Smith. Matt Holiday then put the dagger in the hearts of the Diamonbacks faithful with a three-run homer for a 6-1 lead.

Arizona tried to mount a comeback in the eighth inning as Chris Snyder hit a three-run homer to cut their deficit to 6-4 but the Rockies went to Manny Corpas who got the final out of the inning.

Corpas returned for the ninth and got Jeff Salazar to ground out but then gave up a double to Young to give the Diamondbacks a breath of hope. That quickly ended when Stephen Drew flew out to second and Eric Byrnes hit a bouncer to short that Tulowitzki threw to Todd Helton at first for the final out.

The win marked the Rockies 21st in the last 22 games, a stretch that helped them close a 6 ½ game deficit in the wildcard race to earn their trip to the postseason.
