Chiefs Trade Michael Bennett to Bucs

Atlanta, GA 10/16/2007 8:36:02 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs traded running back Michael Bennett to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday.

Bennett, a first-round draft choice by Minnesota out of the University of Wisconsin in 2001, went on the trading block when the Chiefs activated Priest Holmes to the active roster. Holmes, a former Pro Bowler who set a NFL record by scoring 27 touchdowns during the 2003 season, is attempting a comeback after missing the last two years with a neck injury.

Meanwhile, Bennett will have a shot at a comeback of his own. After starting all 16 games and rushing for 1,296 yards and five touchdowns during the 2002 season with the Vikings, Bennett has rushed for just 1,448 and five TDs the last five seasons combined. He signed with the Chiefs as a free agent in 2006.

Though the trade has not been announced by either team, Bennett confirmed Monday night he had been swapped in an interview with The Kansas City Star.

The NFL trade deadline is today at 4 p.m., with the Bucs likely having surrendered a second-day pick in the 2008 draft.

The 5-foot-9, 207-pound Bennett has carried 20 times for 52 yards as the backup to All-Pro Larry Johnson this season. The former Big Ten champion in the 100 meters, Bennett has touchdown runs of 85, 78 and 61 yards on his resume and likely will figure prominently in the Tampa Bay mix.

Since losing feature tailback Carnell "Cadillac" Williams to a season-ending knee injury in a win at Carolina Sept. 30, and backup Michael Pittman for at least 6-8 weeks due to a high ankle sprain suffered Oct. 7 in a loss at Indianapolis, the Bucs have struggled in rushing for just 47 yards on 29 carries the last two games. Earnest Graham, who started Sunday's 13-10 victory against the Tennessee Titans, carried 13 times for 29 yards in his first pro start.

Tampa Bay (4-2), currently tied with Carolina for first place in the NFC South, travels to Detroit this weekend to face the Lions (3-2) at Ford Field.

Though in-season trades are relatively rare in the NFL, make it four straight seasons the Bucs have made a deal to beat the deadline.

In 2004, they solved a contract dispute with disgruntled wide receiver Keenan McCardell by sending him to San Diego for a third-round draft choice. In 2005, following a season-ending knee injury to Brian Griese, the Bucs acquired quarterback Tim Rattay from San Francisco for a sixth-round pick. A year ago, they sent defensive tackle Anthony McFarland to the Indianapolis in exchange for a second-rounder.
