Nation's Top Prep Basketball Player Commits to Georgetown

Atlanta, GA 10/16/2007 9:19:10 PM

Greg Monroe, the nation's top-ranked high school basketball player, committed to Georgetown University this past weekend. The commitment comes after Monroe took an official visit to the Washington, DC campus for the Hoyas' Midnight Madness.

The Louisiana native had already taken an official visit to LSU and was scheduled to visit Texas, Duke and Connecticut.

The 6-foot-10, 225-pound forward attends Helen Cox H.S. in Harvey, LA. Monroe has been ranked in the top 10 in the nation since he was a sophomore.

Georgetown is coming off of a Final Four season in which they went 30-7 and lost in the national semifinals to Ohio State and number one pick Greg Oden, 67-60.

Head coach John Thompson III's team lost Big East Player of the Year Jeff Green to the NBA Draft, in which he was the number five pick. However, they return the rest of their team, including Roy Hibbert, considered to be the best center in college basketball this year.

Georgetown is currently ranked #5 in Sporting News College Basketball Magazine and is expected to be in the top five when the AP rankings are released.

The Hoyas brought in a monster recruiting class this year that included two McDonald's All-Americans: Austin Freeman from DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD) and Chris Wright from St. John's College (Washington, DC). This was the first time Georgetown has had two McDonald's All-Americans come in since Dwayne Bryant and Mark Tillmon in 1986.

Monroe is a lock for the McDonald's All-American Game, the nation's premier all-star game for high school basketball players.

He joins Chris Braswell, Jason Clark and Henry Sims as Georgetown's committed recruits for the class of 2008. Many recruiting experts say with Monroe's commitment that the Hoyas have the nation's best recruiting class.
