Legendary head football coach Tom Osborne is returning to the Nebraska Cornhuskers as an interim replacement for fired athletic director Steve Pederson.
Osborne was the head coach of the football program from 1973-1997 and in those 25 years he never won fewer than nine games and finished in the AP Top 25 in each of those seasons.
It was under Osborne that the Cornhuskers captured three national championships in a four year period (1994, 1995, 1997).
With the current Cornhuskers squad struggling through a 4-3 start and a 1-2 record in the Big 12 all eyes are now on Osborne who could determine the fate of current head coach Bill Callahan.
University chancellor Harvey Perlman announced the move earlier today in a news release and Osborne was quoted as saying “I've spent the majority of my life working with the athletic department at the university, and I want to do what I can at this point to continue in the pursuit of excellence that has been previously established.”
