Paul Byrd is the Word as Indians within One Game of World Series after Beating Red Sox

Atlanta, Ga. 10/17/2007 11:14:06 AM

The Cleveland Indians climbed to within one game of reaching the World Series and chasing their first title since 1948 after beating the Boston Red Sox 7-3 on Tuesday night to take a 3-1 advantage in the best-of-seven ALCS.

It took awhile but the Indians’ bats figured out Boston starter Tim Wakefield in the bottom of the fifth as Casey Blake hit a solo homer and Jhonny Peralta capped the seven run frame with a three-run blast that gave Cleveland a 7-0 lead.

Cleveland’s third straight win was largely in part due to the sensational pitching of starter Paul Byrd who kept the Red Sox off the board through five innings before surrendering a pair of homeruns to David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez. Manager Eric Wedge then went to his bullpen and Jensen Lewis promptly gave up a homer to Mike Lowell to make the score 7-3.

Jensen settled down and retired the next six Boston hitters he faced before turning the ball over to Rafael Betancourt in the eighth and the Indians closer retired six in a row to bring the Indians to within one game of the World Series.

Game five will be played in Boston on Thursday with the Red Sox sending Josh Beckett to the hill while the Indians will counter with C.C. Sabathia. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 pm ET.
