The Cleveland Indians climbed to within one game of reaching the World Series and chasing their first title since 1948 after beating the Boston Red Sox 7-3 on Tuesday night to take a 3-1 advantage in the best-of-seven ALCS.
It took awhile but the Indians’ bats figured out Boston starter Tim Wakefield in the bottom of the fifth as Casey Blake hit a solo homer and Jhonny Peralta capped the seven run frame with a three-run blast that gave Cleveland a 7-0 lead.
Cleveland’s third straight win was largely in part due to the sensational pitching of starter Paul Byrd who kept the Red Sox off the board through five innings before surrendering a pair of homeruns to David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez. Manager Eric Wedge then went to his bullpen and Jensen Lewis promptly gave up a homer to Mike Lowell to make the score 7-3.
