AP Top 25: #2 South Florida Travels to Take on Rutgers Thursday

Atlanta, GA 10/18/2007 4:41:16 AM

#2 South Florida takes on Rutgers Thursday in the battle of the Cinderellas. Last season, Rutgers came out of nowhere to go 11-2 and make it to a bowl game. They beat Kansas State, 37-10 in the Texas Bowl.

Running back Ray Rice became one of the best rushers in college football. This season, Rice is playing just as well, but the Scarlet Knights have lost two of the last three games.

Meanwhile, the Cinderella spell has hit USF as the Golden Bulls have gone from virtual unknown to become #2 team in the country, according to the AP top 25 and the BCS Rankings.

The stories are completely opposite. Rutgers is the birthplace of college football; South Florida played its first game in 1997. Rutgers is trying to make it past .500 now, while South Florida is trying to make it into the national championship game.

Last season, the Scarlet Knights edged South Florida 22-20 when the Bulls failed on a two-point conversion pass in the final seconds. Rice had 35 carries for 202 yards and two touchdown. South Florida hasn't given up a 100-yard rusher since then, 14 games ago.

Quarterback Mike Teel has had a great season thus far and looks to continue that against USF. Teel is fifth in the nation in passing efficiency and his two favorite targets, wide receivers Tyquan Underwood and Kenny Britt, are both the nation's top 10 for receiving yards per game.

The Scarlet Knights' offensive line must really protect Teel on Thursday. USF, led by defensive end George Selvie, leads the nation in tackles for loss with just over 11 per game. Selvie, who leads the nation in sacks and tackles for loss, and linebacker Ben Moffitt will be coming after Teel all game.

South Florida will rely on quarterback Mike Grothe to produce against the Scarlet Knights. The sophomore has thrown for 1,121 yards and also leads the team in rushing.
