Heisman Trophy Race: College Football Week 7

Atlanta, GA 10/19/2007 2:40:20 AM

After the first half of this wild college football season comes to a close, the Heisman Trophy race is narrowing down. There were many players who came into this season with a lot of hype and fizzled; others who were almost unknown and have risen; and some who were known and maintained their composure to stay consistent.

Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan has consistently proved that he is one of the premier quarterbacks in the nation. Last week, he completed 32-of-49 passes for 291 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 27-14 win over Notre Dame. He takes his undefeated Eagles

Kentucky quarterback Andre’ Woodson shook up the world, leading the Wildcats to a huge upset against #1 LSU in triple-overtime, 43-37. He solidified his place in the Heisman Trophy race, completing 21-of-38 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns. Woodson also threw two interceptions. He enters the second game of arguably the toughest back-to-back schedule in the nation as he faces Florida this Saturday. If he reigns victorious again, they might as well etch his name in stone as the 2007 Heisman winner.

Michigan running back Mike Hart still leads the nation in carries (200), rushing yards (1078) and rushing yards per game (154.0). Last week, Hart had his season-low 102 yards on 21 carries due to hurting his right ankle in the first half. He did not play the rest of the game, but the Wolverines won 48-21 against Purdue. He has led Michigan to a five-game winning streak after their dismal start. They are now back in the top 25, at the top of the Big 10 standings, and look to extend the winning streak against resurgent Illinois.

Arkansas running back Darren McFadden has a target on his back since he was runner-up to Troy Smith in the Heisman race last season. This year, he has not disappointed. Unfortunately, last week, he had a season-low 43 yards on 17 carries and no touchdowns in the tough 9-7 loss to Auburn. After averaging 155.8 yards per game in the first five games, he dropped tremendously in this performance against the Tigers. However, he looks to redeem himself against Ole Miss on Saturday.

Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree is hands-down the best receiver in the nation. California receiver DeSean Jackson came in with the most hype, but Crabtree has already broken records this season. As a freshman, he already has set an NCAA freshman record with 17 touchdown catches. Crabtree leads the nation in touchdown receptions as well as overall catches (78) and receiving yards (1,224), all by a very strong margin. He has the biggest margin on his competitors of any college player in the country.

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow had a bye week last week, but is still not over the two-game losing streak that the Gators suffered. He takes on Kentucky in the quarterback duel of the SEC against Woodson, as he tries to ensure that it doesn’t extend to three.

Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan had a very erratic game last week. He set a career-record for attempts (75) and completions (44) in his career, while also throwing four touchdowns and four interceptions. This is the second time in three games that he has thrown four or more picks. He threw five against Idaho. With the lack of strength in the Hawaii schedule and his erratic play, Brennan is out of the race.
