College Football Scores: Rutgers Ends #2 South Florida’s Dream Season with Upset

Atlanta, Ga. 10/19/2007 11:09:21 AM

Rutgers junior running back Ray Rice was a workhorse Thursday night as he carved up the #2 South Florida defense for 182 yards on 39 carries while wide receiver Tiquan Underwood was a nightmare for the Bulls secondary as he collected 114 yards and two touchdowns on five receptions as the Scarlet Knights staged a 30-27 upset win on Thursday.

South Florida (6-1) led 17-13 at the half after quarterback Matt Grothe collected an 18-yard touchdown running and then hit Jesse Hester on a 28-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter.

But Rutgers (5-2) came out ready in the second half and after forcing the Bulls to punt on their opening possession the Scarlet Knights collected a quick strike touchdown when quarterback Mike Teel hit Underwood on a 69-yard TD for a 20-17 lead.

The Rutgers defense came up big again on the next South Florida possession as the blocked a 37-yard field goal attempt and the Scarlet Knights offense went to work once again. After driving the 55-yards and facing a fourth and three from the 15-yard line Rutgers lined up for a field goal but third-string quarterback Andrew DePaola took the snap and found Kevin Brock for a touchdown and a 27-17 advantage.

South Florida pulled to within seven at the end of the third quarter when Delbert Alvarado kicked a 34-yard field goal but the Scarlet Knights countered with a 51-yard boot from Jeremy Ito early in the fourth to reestablish their ten point cushion.

The Bulls struck back and took their next possession 70–yards and scored when Mike Ford crossed the goal line with 9:16 left on the clock.

It looked as if things were going the Bulls way when they recovered a Ray Rice fumble on the Rutgers 39-yard line but the Scarlet Knights defense stepped it up and after sacking Grothe on first down forced a pair of incomplete passes that led to a punt.

South Florida would get the ball back one more time with 1:22 left on the clock and inside Rutgers territory but Grothe once again took a costly sack that then rather than call a timeout he spiked the ball to set up a third and 22. After an incomplete pass to Hester the Bulls were down to their final play and Grothe found Amarri Jackson on what would have been a first down but the wide receiver was flagged for pass interference. On fourth and 37 Grothe threw up a prayer and it was picked off by Zaire Kitchen, ending the Bulls dreams of a BCS title.
