Petr Sykora scored a pair of goals in regulation and Sidney Crosby added two assists and scored the decisive goal in a shootout as the Pittsburgh Penguins (3-3-0) beat the Carolina Hurricanes (4-1-2) 4-3 on Friday night.
Ray Whitney put the Hurricanes in front 1-0 in the first minute of the opening period with a power-play goal but the Penguins answered with just over a minute remaining in the frame when Sykora snuck one past Cam Ward for the equalizer.
Carolina then built a 3-1 advantage in the second period with goals from Trevor Letowski and Justin Williams but once again the Penguins countered with a goal from Adam Hall and Sykora’s second of the game with six seconds left on the clock.
Neither side could find the back of the net in the third period and the overtime as scoreless as well, turning the contest over to a shootout to determine who received two-points.
