After building a 24-0 lead mid way through the third quarter the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes had to overcome their own turnovers and held on to beat the Michigan State Spartans 24-17 on Saturday.
Buckeyes running back Chris Wells finished the day with 221 yards on the ground and a touchdown while Todd Boeckman threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns.
Boeckman tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jake Ballard and Ryan Pretorius kicked a 42-yard field goal as the Buckeyes held a 10-0 lead after the first quarter. Chris Wells added a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to head into the half up 17-0.
Things kept rolling in the second half for the Buckeyes as Boeckman found Brian Robiskie on a 50-yard touchdown pass and the game was looking like it could get out of hand.
That turned quickly as the Spartans scored a pair of touchdowns on Buckeyes turnovers late in the third quarter. Otis Wiley picked off Boeckman and returned it 54 yards for a TD and Sir Darean Adams gathered up a fumble and scored from 21 yards out.
The Spartans were done in by their inability to move the ball on offense as they could collect just 185 yards in the game, nearly 40 yards less than Wells collected for the Buckeyes.
