By the end of the first quarter the game had already been won as the #9 West Virginia Mountaineers raced to a 28-0 lead in the opening 15 minutes and then cruised to a 38-13 victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday.
It didn’t take long for
Rather than go for a quick strike, the offense grinded out a 12 play drive that was capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from White to Owen Schmitt for a 14-0 advantage.
On the ensuing kickoff Derek Peques gave the Bulldogs great field position with a 51-yard return but on the first play from scrimmage Anthony Dixon fumbled and the Mountaineers recovered. Three plays later the Homecoming crowd was celebrating a 10-yard touchdown pass from White to Darius Reynaud.
The nightmare continued for the Bulldogs as they were forced to punt once again and the Mountaineers offense wasn’t done yet. This time it was Steve Slaton who found the endzone as he busted a 26-yarder with just over two minutes left in the quarter.
As bad as the first 13 minutes were for the Bulldogs it got worse as quarterback Wesley Carroll fumbled on their final possession of the quarter.
Slaton finished the game with 127 yards rushing and had 36 yards receiving while White threw for 61 yards and two touchdowns and added 89 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
With the win
