AP Top 25 Rankings Week 8: Ohio State Keeps Top Spot as Boston College Moves up to #2

Atlanta, Ga. 10/22/2007 2:48:03 AM

It been a running theme throughout this year’s AP Top 25 as another week of upsets has shaken up the top spots and continued to position some unlikely teams for a possible national title run. While Ohio State survived against Michigan State and Boston College enjoyed a bye week others weren’t as fortunate as South Florida, South Carolina and Kentucky saw their chase effectively end with devastating losses.

For the second week in a row the Ohio State Buckeyes sit at #1 in the AP Top 25 after beating the Michigan State Spartans 24-17 on Saturday. Chris Wells was the dominant force for the Buckeyes as he collected 221 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Taking advantage of the South Florida loss, the Boston College Eagles moved up one spot to #2 despite having a bye week. The Eagles could solidify their ranking on Thursday when they travel to take on #8 Virginia Tech in a huge ACC match-up.

The LSU Tigers shook off last week’s loss to Kentucky by beating Auburn on a last second touchdown that moved them up two spots to #3 this week. Matt Flynn saved the Tigers season when he found Demetrius Byrd with one second left on the clock.

It wasn’t pretty but the Oklahoma Sooners used a fourth quarter rally to beat the Iowa State Cyclones and maintain their #4 ranking in the AP Top 25. Chris Brown accounted for both touchdowns for the Sooners.

Moving up two spots to #5 this week are the Oregon Ducks who used a 24 point fourth quarter to beat Washington 55-24 on Saturday. The Ducks collected 465 yards on the ground with Jonathan Stewart leading the way with 251 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are continuing to climb back into the ranks of the elite as they moved up three spots to #6 after beating Mississippi State 38-13 on Saturday. The Mountaineers put 28 points on the board in the first quarter to cruise past the Bulldogs.

Taking a week off yet still moving up five spots this week are the Arizona Wildcats who are now sitting at 7-0 on the year and #7 in the AP Top 25. The Wildcats get to host the struggling California Golden Bears in a key Pac-10 match-up next week.

Also enjoying a week off were the Virginia Tech Hokies who moved up three spots to #8 and are now in a strong position to crack the top five if they win next week. The Hokies will host #2 Boston College on Thursday night with national title hopes on the line.

The USC Trojans are doing their best to keep their title hopes alive as they demolished the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 38-0 on Saturday to move up four spots to #9 this week. Everything will be on the line next week as the Trojans travel to face #5 Oregon in a Pac-10 challenge.

Sharing the #9 spot in the AP Top 25 this week are the Florida Gators who traveled to Kentucky and knocked off the #7 Wildcats 45-37 on Saturday. Tim Tebow threw for four touchdowns and ran for another to move the Gators five spots in the poll. It won’t get any easier for Florida as they face Georgia next week with the Bulldogs coming off a bye week.
