Red Sox in World Series After Capping ALCS Comeback with Third Straight Pounding of Indians

Atlanta, Ga. 10/22/2007 11:42:45 AM

The Boston Red Sox completed a dramatic comeback from a three games to one hole in the ALCS and beat the Cleveland Indians 11-2 on Sunday night to win the series and advance to the World Series where they will face the Colorado Rockies.

Having been down this road before, the Red Sox never appeared nervous facing the ominous task of having to beat the Indians three straight games. Instead they outscored the Tribe 30-5 over those three games and once again proved they had the resolve to overcome major obstacles.

On Sunday they jumped to a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first three innings but the Indians managed to cut the Red Sox lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth. That was as close as Cleveland would get, as Hideki Okijima relieved Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka in the top of the sixth and limited the Indians bats to three hits over two innings.

After Okijima finished off the top of the seventh the Red Sox got busy on some breathing room as Dustin Pedroia hit a two-run homer to left center of Cleveland relief pitcher Rafael Betancourt, giving Boston a 5-2 advantage.

Okijima took the mound in the top of the eighth but quickly gave up a bunt single to Grady Sizemore and a single to Asdrubal Cabrera and Boston manager Terry Francona went to his closer Jonathan Papelbon early. With runners on first and second Papelbon struck out Travis Hafner and then got Victor Martinez to hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out. Cleveland had runners at second and third when Papelbon got Ryan Garko to fly out to center to end the inning.

Boston then put six more runs on the board in the bottom of the eight as JD Drew singled home Mike Lowell, Pedroia drove in three with a double to deep center, and Kevin Youkilis hit a two-run bomb to left.

Papelbon returned to the mound in the top of the ninth and after giving up a leadoff single to Jhonny Peralta he quickly got Kenny Lofton to line out to left, Franklin Gutierrez to line out to center and Casey Blake to fly out to center to end the game.

The Red Sox will now appear in their second World Series in four years as they advance to take on the Colorado Rockies starting Wednesday night. It was in 2004 that the Red Sox buried an 86-year-old championship drought when they swept the St. Louis Cardinals in four games.
