The New York Yankees have requested a face-to-face meeting with third baseman Alex Rodriguez to keep him from opting out of his contract and leaving the team. Last week, Rodriguez and agent Scott Boras held a three-day meeting to gather information and talk about his status with the team.
Rodriguez has until the 10th day following the World Series to decide whether to opt out of his record $252 million, 10-year contract and become a free agent.
The Steinbrenners have cleared general manager Brian Cashman to make offers to Rodriguez and soon-to-be free agents Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera.
Cashman has made it clear that the team will not pursue Rodriguez as a free agent if he opts out of his contract.

As far as Rivera, the decision by Joe Torre to leave the team has a direct effect on his return to the club. He was a strong Torre advocate and the loss of his manager may cause the Yankees to lose their closer.
