Monday Night Football: Peyton Manning Leads Colts Past Jaguars to Stay Perfect

Atlanta, Ga. 10/23/2007 11:34:00 AM

With all the hype surrounding the New England Patriots and their perfect record the Indianapolis Colts have gone virtually unnoticed this year, but don’t tell that to Jacksonville, as the Jaguars got steamrolled 29-7 on Monday night.

Peyton Manning threw for 259 yards and a touchdown and even dove in for a 1-yard touchdown to help move the Colts to 6-0 on the year and drop the Jaguars to 4-2.

The real story behind the Colts is their revamped defense that once again put in a solid effort and limited Jacksonville to just 226 yards, collected a safety and forced three turnovers in the game. Heading in to Monday night’s game the Colts defense was ranked 5th in the NFL, allowing 278 yards per game.

Indy got on the board with just 35 seconds left in the first quarter when Kenton Keith ran it in from 3-yards out for a 7-0 lead. Manning then made it 14-0 when he bullied his way in from a yard out with 5:27 left in the half. Adam Vinatieri closed the second quarter with a 36-yard field goal and the Colts defense preserved the first half shutout.

Jacksonville came out in the third and looked ready to play as Maurice Jones-Drew took the opening kickoff 65 yards to put the Jaguars on the Indianapolis 40 yard line. Ten plays later the Jaguars punched it in from one-yard out as Jones-Drew went up the middle to make the score 17-7.

The Jaguars then forced the Colts to punt but H Smith pinned Jacksonville on their own four-yard line and on second and ten Quinn Gray was caught in the endzone for a safety. Indianapolis then marched down the field and Vinatieri booted another field goal and the score was 22-7.

On Jacksonville’s next possession Gray was picked off but Manning returned the favor and the Jaguars had good field position but the Colts defense once again stepped it up and forced an incomplete pass on fourth and ten to give the ball back to Manning and the offense.

Not one to make consecutive mistakes, Manning moved the Colts down the field and then hit Dallas Clark on a 35-yard touchdown to cap the scoring.

Indianapolis now holds a two game lead in the AFC South, dropping the Jaguars into a tie with the Tennessee Titans for second.
